The Boys Track Team competed in the AAAA SCHSL Track and Field Qualifier Meet held at Sumter High this past weekend. There were many great performances by all the athletes but only the following three qualified for the State Finals.

Chris Anderson continued his dominance in the Pole Vault clearing 11 feet 6 inches before meet officials closed the event after 8 qualifiers had been deemed. Chris was vaulting out of his shoes and is eager to get after next weekend. Chris – “I was flying through my jumps. The school record is mine next week.”)

Jayson Brady just one year after missing the State Finals in the 1600 made it his mission to leave no question he would be in the Finals this year. Jayson ran a personal record 4:32.6 and qualified 5th for the finals. Jayson after the race was fired up and was heard saying. – “I’ve got more in the tank they better be ready next weekend.”

The shock of the day came when sophomore Kyle Bailey took off in the 800 meter run and lead the race for the first 700 meters before getting outkicked to the finish line. Coming into the race Kyle was ranked 24th in a field of 32 runners. Kyle and his distance coach, Coach White had talked about how he should run the race to give him a shot at getting into the finals the prior week and it all paid off as Kyle placed 8th overall qualifying him for the finals with a time of 2:01.64. This time was a 4 second personal record for Kyle and after the race he had this to say. Kyle – “I just went out there and gave it everything I had. all those hard workouts paid off.”

Coach Scheuer was jumping for joy most of the day as athlete after athlete had tremendous performances and personal records fell. Coach Scheuer – “I am so proud of all these boys they have worked so hard to get where they are and have earned everything they have accomplished. Our team this year is very young and there are numerous guys who just missed making the finals. Our motto this season was “No Excuses, Only Results” the team really bought into this and whether it was a practice or a meet this group of young men gave it everything they had and are the definition of a team. Go Sharks.”

Coach Scheuer wanted it known that track is a team sport and without all of the other members of the team none of these kids would have done what they did. With the season over for most of the team it would be easy to turn in their uniforms and move on to the summer but if you stop by the track this week you will see numerous runners who didn’t qualify out there working out along side their teammates who did qualify to give them the best shot at improving their performances. Coach Scheuer – “That is what makes this team so great and our school so successful. This team is a family.”
